50 Cent Grand Pre / Evangeline of 1930
Lightly Hinged or Never Hinged
When the British took control of Nova Scotia from the French, they expelled many of the residents, who were know as the Acadians. Many of these people did not want to leave their homes, and were killed in battles with the British. One woman, Evangeline, whose statue you see here, became a symbol of the plight of the Acadians (as well as the subject of a famous poem).
For those of you living south of the border here in the U.S., you may find it of interest that many of these people moved from Nova Scotia to the "cajun country" of Louisiana, where their decendants live (and maintain their French language) up to today.
